Jess & Christophers' Story of Disruptive Hope

Jess & Christopher

We'd like you to meet the 5th family who Disruptive Hope has helped realize their dream to adopt. Jess and Christopher welcomed their daughter Valencia earlier this year after experiencing a loss of the first baby they matched with. We are so excited for them to share their story with you!

To Friends of Disruptive Hope -

Adoption was always meant to be part of our story we just had no idea how it would look like. Christopher and I have been married 17 years and from the beginning of our marriage we knew we wanted to adopt. My mom was adopted along with my Aunt on my dad’s side. Growing up around adoption I saw the beauty of families made by choice not just blood. When I lost the ability to conceive after a medical procedure, adoption became even more of a priority.

Our adoption journey would take us on a 3 year wait to be matched to our son Zell. When we matched our hearts rejoiced. We picked his name and started to prepare for his arrival. 6 weeks before his original birthdate we received a call that his birth mother had a placental abruption and he was born stillborn. Our hearts were crushed. In every way we were “expecting” him as any pregnant family would be. We wept and mourned with his birth mom. She told us we were his parents and asked us to name him for his birth and death certificate. In our mourning process we were also hit with the news that a large amount of the funds used for this adoption had been already spent to support his birth mother’s medical, mental health and living expenses. We had already had to fundraise majority of the funds to get to where we had with that adoption.

It hit us that this would make it financially impossible for us to continue with our adoption journey. After talking with our adoption consultant she connected us with Disruptive Hope Fund. Katie and Dan met with us and told us the fund would like to cover the entire distributed amount. I cannot put into words what a miracle and huge gift this was and is to our family. Our adoption journey would not end in grief and sadness but would eventually lead us to our daughter. And this gift would go beyond just touching our family.  It would bless the birth mom of our future daughter and her extended family as we would eventually build relationships with each of them.

Our family of 6 could not be more smitten with our daughter. She has brought light and joy into our lives after some very hard and dark times. She is a miracle that is in our lives because of Disruptive Hope Fund. Her smiles and giggles are always contagious. She is learning to roll and bat at toys. Each one of us would not be who we are today without her presence in our lives. We are honored to be called her family. We are forever grateful to Disruptive Hope fund for making our continued journey possible.

With Love - Jess and Christopher
